The nominations for the Arjuna awards have been made, but winners are yet to be selected. However, one notable name missing in the nominations for this award is H.S Prannoy.
The Asian Championship bronze medallist has previously voiced his anger at the BFI [Badminton Federation of India] for sweeping his performances under the carpet, which led to his exclusion int the Arjuna award nominations.
The Federation has, however, replied to the shuttler saying he missed the chance to be nominated because of some disciplinary actions taken towards him. The names recommended by the BFI were doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. With Singles players like Sameer Verma for the award.
A top official in the BFI told reporters that “the selection of players for the award is not mainly based on their performances on the field. Still, it depends on the various factors which include their behaviors and character while representing the nation.”
“In this situation, Prannoy was not considered for the Arjuna award based on disciplinary action and some vital instances where his character was questionable.” He added
The BWF still restricts tournaments and training indoors due to the pandemic spread. However, plans are being made to ease gradually full training.
“Due to the pandemic spread, we encourage all shutter to train indoors and stay safe this period. They should prepare for tournaments ahead as there is a possibility of resuming tournaments behind closed doors.”
