Sports Ministry Approves Financial Aid for HS Prannoy’s Trainer Ahead of Paris Olympics

The Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) has approved shuttler HS Prannoy’s proposal for financial assistance to cover expenses for his trainer, Rohan George Mathews, during their stay in Paris for the upcoming Olympics. This decision shows the government’s commitment to providing comprehensive support to athletes through its Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

The TOPS program will cover a wide range of expenses for Mathews, including airfare, boarding and lodging, daily fees, visa fees, local transportation, and medical expenditures. Additionally, Mathews will receive an Olympic Preparation Allowance (OPA) for the duration of the Games. This holistic support aims to ensure that Prannoy receives the best possible guidance and training as he competes on the world stage.

Prannoy, alongside Lakshya Sen, will be representing India in the men’s singles badminton event at the Paris Olympics. Their participation marks a significant moment for Indian badminton, highlighting the country’s growing presence in the sport on the international stage.

In addition to Prannoy’s support, the MOC has also sanctioned proposals for other athletes, reflecting a broad-based approach to Olympic preparation. Athletes Vikash Singh, Suraj Panwar, Ankita Dhyani, Sarvesh Kushare, and shooter Anantjeet Singh Naruka have received approval for financial assistance towards various equipment needed for training and competition. This support is crucial for these athletes to perform at their best and compete effectively.

Furthermore, the MOC has approved financial assistance for Indian rifle shooter Rudrankksh Patil, who will be training in Serbia for the 50m 3-position (3P) event for 20 days. Patil, who has recently started training for the 50m 3P event in addition to the 10m air rifle event, will train under the guidance of 2020 Olympic bronze medallist Sebic Milenko. This training stint aims to help Patil master the basics of the 3P event and enhance his overall performance.

The MOC’s proactive measures reflect its dedication to ensuring that Indian athletes receive top-tier support as they prepare for the Paris Olympics. By financing the necessary training, equipment, and personnel, the ministry aims to create an environment where athletes can focus entirely on their performance without worrying about logistical and financial hurdles.

The sports ministry’s comprehensive support extends beyond financial aid, as seen in the case of wrestler Reetika Hooda, who is currently facing challenges in obtaining a visa for her coach. The ministry, alongside the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), is working to resolve such issues, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the individual needs of athletes and their support teams.

These initiatives highlight the importance of structured and sustained support for athletes aiming for Olympic success. By addressing the diverse needs of athletes—from training under experienced coaches abroad to ensuring the presence of personal trainers—the MOC is paving the way for a more robust and competitive Indian presence at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

As the countdown to the Paris Olympics continues, the support from the MOC and the broader sports ministry will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the preparation and performance of India’s Olympic-bound athletes. With such backing, athletes like HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, and Rudrankksh Patil can focus on achieving excellence and bringing glory to the nation.
