Tanya Hemanth Clinches Bendigo International 2024 Women’s Singles Title

India’s Tanya Hemanth triumphed at the Bendigo International 2024 badminton tournament, securing the women’s singles title after a dominant performance in the final against Tung Ciou-tong of Chinese Taipei.

Held at the Red Energy Arena Bendigo in Victoria, Australia, on Sunday, the 21-year-old Hemanth, seeded second, outplayed the sixth-seeded Tung in straight games, winning 21-17, 21-17 in a match that lasted 41 minutes.

Ranked 71st in the world, Hemanth’s victory over world No. 98 Tung marks her third international title. She previously won the 2022 India International and the 2023 Iran Fajr International, further establishing herself as a rising star in Indian badminton.

Hemanth’s path to the title was marked by strong performances throughout the tournament. In the semi-finals, she staged a remarkable comeback to defeat world No. 106 Jaslyn Hooi of Singapore, overcoming a first-game deficit to win 15-21, 21-18, 21-15 in a grueling match that lasted over an hour.

Prior to that, Hemanth dominated Yuan Chi Liao of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals with a commanding 21-7, 21-11 victory. Her earlier rounds saw similarly convincing wins against Tsai Hsin-Pei of Chinese Taipei (21-17, 21-10) in the round of 16 and Yuelin Zhang of Australia (21-12, 21-11) in the opening round.

Tanya Hemanth’s latest victory not only adds to her growing list of accolades but also boosts her confidence as she continues her rise in the international badminton rankings.
