Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas has backed Dallas Mavericks talisman Luka Doncic to win the Most Valuable Player title in the upcoming season of the NBA. Doncic has impressed one and all in his young career and he is on the right path to find more success.
Doncic has already won the Rookie of the Year back in 2019. Meanwhile, Doncic averaged 33.9 points, 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds in 70 games in 2023-24 and thus played an instrumental role in taking the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals along with Kyrie Irving.
The Slovenian was close to averaging a triple double in the previous season of the NBA and Arenas has backed the youngster to achieve the feat in the next edition.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks have also added the services of former Golden State Warriors veteran Klay Thompson.
“I don’t want to put this type of pressure on him. I’d be surprised if he don’t average a triple-double. Because if you average that many assists with what you had, now you got (Thompson) who’s a catch-and-shoot, so some of your assists will come without even any effort this time,” Arenas said on Gil Arena podcast.
“You should average a triple-double. He will probably be the number one candidate for MVP. He’s gonna do something that hasn’t been done in a few years.”
On the other hand, Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki wants Doncic to keep doing what he has been doing in the last couple of seasons after his NBA Finals loss against the Boston Celtics.
“Well, just keep doing what he’s doing, honestly. Do your game. Play your game. I know it wasn’t the ending you were hoping for, but you know what? You’re just getting started, you’re 25 years old. It’s good sometimes to get a little disappointment, to try again, to motivate you and push you to work harder and become an even better player if that’s even possible,” Nowitzki said on DLLS Mavs podcast.
