After stepping away from professional basketball in recent years, five-time NBA All-Star John Wall has officially announced his retirement, and also the start of an exciting new journey. Wall, 34, confirmed on Tuesday that he is hanging up his jersey for good, but fans won’t have to wait long to see him again. According to a report by The Washington Post, Wall will join NBA on Prime as a studio analyst when the program launches in October.
Amazon confirmed the news a day later, sharing Wall’s transition into broadcasting with a social media post that highlighted his enthusiasm for the role.
“After 13 seasons in the NBA filled with unforgettable moments, I’m thrilled to start a new chapter with NBA on Prime,” Wall said in a statement released by the company.
In a heartfelt message to fans, Wall emphasized that while his playing days are over, his commitment to basketball remains as strong as ever.
“This change isn’t just a career shift; it’s an opportunity to stay close to the sport I love and share the insights I’ve gained throughout my career as a top-level point guard,” Wall said.
“Basketball has shaped my life, and now I can help fans see it from a new perspective. Although this is a new path, my passion for basketball remains strong. I look forward to growing in this role, learning from the team around me, and most importantly, sharing with viewers the real, behind-the-scenes experience of competing at the highest level.”
Wall has not appeared in an NBA game since January 2023, but only made his retirement official this week. Over the course of his 13-year career, he played the bulk of his games with the Washington Wizards, where he quickly became a franchise cornerstone. He later had stints with the Houston Rockets and the LA Clippers.
Selected first overall in the 2010 NBA Draft, Wall leaves behind a legacy defined by speed, court vision, and leadership. In 647 games, he averaged 18.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 8.9 assists.
Wall will join a high-profile panel on NBA on Prime, which is set to launch this fall as part of the NBA’s new media rights deal. He’ll be joined by fellow former NBA stars Blake Griffin, Dirk Nowitzki, and others, bringing a wealth of experience and personality to the broadcast booth.
