The Los Angeles Lakers have continued their aggressive offseason makeover, reportedly trading center Deandre Ayton to the Washington Wizards only days after he exercised his player option for the 2026-27 season.
According to multiple reports, the Lakers will receive guard Jaden Hardy and two future second-round draft picks in exchange for Ayton, bringing a quick end to the former No. 1 overall pick’s tenure in Los Angeles.
The move comes shortly after the Lakers acquired Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz, making Ayton expendable as the organization continues building around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves following LeBron James’ departure.
Ayton’s lone season with the Lakers produced mixed results.
He appeared in 72 games, averaging 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds while showing flashes of the interior presence Los Angeles hoped he would provide. However, inconsistency throughout the regular season and an uneven playoff performance left questions about whether he was the long-term answer at center.
Rather than entering another season with uncertainty in the middle, the Lakers chose a different direction.
Walker Kessler now projects as the franchise’s starting center, giving Los Angeles one of the league’s premier rim protectors and rebounders. The front office believes his defensive presence and pick-and-roll ability make him a better complement to Dončić and the Lakers’ evolving offensive system.
The trade also provides additional flexibility.
Hardy adds another young scoring guard to the roster, while the future draft picks increase the Lakers’ collection of trade assets as they continue evaluating ways to strengthen the roster before training camp. The deal also creates additional financial flexibility for future moves.
For Ayton, the trade represents another opportunity to reset his career.
Washington offers the 27-year-old a fresh environment where he could take on a larger role as the Wizards continue developing their young core. The organization will hope the former first overall selection can rediscover the consistency that once made him one of the league’s most promising centers.
For the Lakers, the message is clear.
Standing still was never an option this offseason. After overhauling the frontcourt and committing fully to a new era, Los Angeles continues reshaping its roster with the goal of returning to championship contention as quickly as possible.
