The Philadelphia 76ers will enter the upcoming season with the NBA’s two leading fast-break scorers from last season playing together.
Tyrese Maxey led the league with 382 fast-break points, while his new teammate LeBron James finished second with 343. The numbers immediately highlight one of the most intriguing elements of their partnership in Philadelphia.
James remains one of basketball’s most dangerous players when the game opens up. His ability to grab the ball and immediately push forward allows him to create transition opportunities without waiting for another player to initiate the offense.
Maxey presents a different challenge. His speed allows him to accelerate immediately after a change of possession, putting pressure on defenders attempting to retreat and organize. With James capable of advancing the ball himself, Maxey should have opportunities to attack open space before defenses can settle.
Their production last season separated them from the rest of the league.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker finished third with 312 fast-break points, followed closely by Kawhi Leonard with 310. Jalen Johnson rounded out the top five with 283.
That means James and Maxey were the only two players in the NBA to surpass 340 fast-break points last season, and they will now share the floor in Philadelphia.
The pairing also gives the 76ers different ways to create offense in transition. James can function as the ball-handler or use his size when attacking the basket, while Maxey can sprint ahead of the play, attack with the ball or take advantage of defenders focusing their attention on James.
Having both players on the floor could also force opponents into difficult decisions immediately after turnovers and missed shots. Retreat toward the basket to contain James, and Maxey can find room elsewhere. Focus on preventing Maxey from accelerating into space, and James can control the possession himself.
The numbers from last season illustrate exactly what Philadelphia is adding.
Maxey produced 382 fast-break points. James recorded 343. Alexander-Walker, Leonard and Johnson were the only other players to reach the top five, but neither Maxey nor James will have to look across the court to find his closest competitor this season.
They will be teammates.
