Aakash Chopra backs Dhruv Jurel’s inclusion for IND vs SA 2025 1st Test

Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra has backed Dhruv Jurel’s inclusion in the opening Test match against South Africa. Jurel has been in fine form and thus Chopra wants the team to include the wicket-keeper bat even if they have to change the playing combination.

The right-hander from Uttar Pradesh had impressed in the two Test matches against the West Indies in the absence of injured Pant as he had scored 175 runs in three innings at an average of 87.50. However, with Pant returning to India’s Test squad, it would be interesting to note India’s playing combination.

Jurel has been in fine form and recently returned with scores of 132 and 127 in the second unofficial Test against South Africa A while playing for India A. 

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has also indicated that Jurel is most likely going to be part of India’s playing XI.

“Will there be place for Dhruv Jurel? I feel they should make place for him. He is a very beautiful example that even if you try to, you cannot drop him. One thing is to knock on the door but it is another thing to push the door and break it. Jurel has done that. Wherever and whenever he has played, he has done well. You can change the combination and composition but do not drop him,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Chopra reckons the Eden Gardens pitch will assist the spinners despite it having a tinge of grass. The renowned commentator wants Shubman Gill to bat first if he wins the toss.

“There used to be a turning pitch at Eden Gardens before. The ball will also move a bit during the early parts. We have seen green tops there as well. But things have changed now. There is not a lot of grass on the pitch for this Test but it does not look like a rank turner. I hope they do not make a rank turner, but it is a spin-friendly surface. I feel win the toss and bat first. But we do not win the toss so be ready to field first, it can be like this too,” he said.

The opening Test match between India and South Africa will be played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, from November 14 onwards.
