Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra believes India was not well prepared for the Test series against South Africa and it led to their downfall. South Africa, on the other hand, had played a two-match Test series against Pakistan in Pakistan.
Chopra also highlighted that India should prepare better pitches to get positive results in home conditions. While the Kolkata pitch had a lot of help for the bowlers, the Guwahati track was rated as a ‘road’ by Indian wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
South Africa won the opening Test by 30 runs whereas they registered a thumping 408-run win in Guwahati to take the series by 2-0, their first series win in India since 2000.
Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel, “We’ll have to review where we are. Of the last seven Test matches at home, we have lost five matches. I think we have to focus on preparing the right kind of pitches. Also, the story is not about weapons and its quality, but how ready you are. New Zealand were ready even though they lost to Sri Lanka. They were better prepared and so were South Africa.
Chopra highlighted that Indian batters got out on short pitched deliveries against Marco Jansen and added their lack of preparation was palpable.
“Their coach said that they may not be the better side, but they were better equipped. And that preparation was seen. They played better and showed more application on a turning pitch. So, I think lack of preparation was evident from India. We got out on short balls as well. Marco Jansen bowled bouncers and got four out,” Chopra went on to add.
South Africa were able to come up with a collective effort throughout the series whereas India were not able to tick any of the right boxes.
The two teams will now take on each other in a three-match ODI series.
