Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra showered praise on Shubman Gill after Gujarat Titans registered a comprehensive 10-wicket win against Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL 2025 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Sunday.
Chasing 200 runs for the win, Gill got off to a slow start as compared to his opening partner, Sai Sudharsan, who was able to hit the ground running. However, the GT captain was able to change his gears after the Powerplay overs.
Gill scored an unbeaten knock of 93 runs off just 53 balls with the help of three fours and seven sixes and a strike rate of 175.47. The right-hander added 205 runs with Sai Sudharsan as GT won without losing any wickets.
“Shubman Gill was going very slow. It seemed like he was going at a run-a-ball. However, he then slog-swept Axar Patel for two sixes, and then he hit a six against T Natarajan, and how well he batted after that,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
The renowned commentator said Gill played risk-free cricket to deliver the goods for his team.
“This has been his season. He is technically compact. He doesn’t play any shot seeing which you would say he is taking a lot of risk or is feeling a lot of pressure. They needed 10 runs per over, it was a 200-run target, and they chased it by snapping their fingers. They were slightly behind the eight ball at one stage, but that also didn’t matter,” he observed.
On the other hand, Sai Sudharsan also continued his rich form, scoring an unbeaten 108 runs off just 61 balls. Chopra noted that the left-hander has become a new name of consistency.
“Sai Sudharsan has become the second name of consistency. How can a player play so clean like pure desi ghee in T20s? He played properly all around the ground. He doesn’t play even one bad shot. You cannot associate ugly with his game, but he runs at a strike rate of 170,” he said.
While Sudharsan has scored 617 runs in 12 matches, Gill has amassed 601 runs in as many games in the ongoing season.
With this win, GT, along with RCB and PBKS, have qualified for the playoffs.
GT will next take on Lucknow Super Giants at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Thursday.
