Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra has shed light on Gujarat Titans’ batting ahead of their Friday clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the ongoing IPL 2026. Chopra said the IPL 2022 champions are over-reliant on their top three batters – Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, just like Rajasthan Royals.
GT’s middle order batters like Rahul Tewatia, Glenn Philipps, and Shahrukh Khan have failed to deliver the goods for the franchise. Chopra said GT are either denying this fact or they are delusional.
“Gujarat, you will have to think a lot about what you need to do. Their life is stuck in their top three. Either they are denying it publicly, or they are delusional, the same as the Rajasthan Royals. Either you deny it publicly, or you actually think that’s not the case,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
Chopra said New Zealand batter Glenn Philipps hasn’t scored runs in the ongoing season and the franchise doesn’t have options to replace him. Philipps has scored 67 runs in five innings of IPL 2026.
“They also have a middle-order problem. There is no doubt about that. Glenn Phillips hasn’t scored runs, and they don’t have any other option as well. Sherfane Rutherford used to be there, and they have already sold him,” he observed.
The renowned commentator reckons Washington Sundar is not at his absolute best if he bats in the middle overs whereas Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan have been inconsistent.
“Washington Sundar is batting, but Washi’s ideal T20 innings will be if he gets to bat in the Powerplay, accelerates in that, and then he can build on it. However, if you ask him to come straightaway in the middle overs and manage the game, that game will always be tough for him. Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia haven’t done anything for a while now,” Chopra elaborated.
GT will take on RCB on Friday.
