Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra has shed light on India’s chances to qualify for the 2027 World Test Championship final. Chopra is not confident that the two-time runners-up will be able to qualify for the summit clash.
The renowned commentator highlighted that India will need to win all of their five Test matches against Australia in home conditions, but noted that it rarely happens. India has lost five out of their last seven Test matches in home conditions and they will definitely need to turn a corner.
India currently occupies the sixth position in the WTC standings with 48.15% points. Shubman Gill’s team recently lost a Test series against South Africa by 0-2 at home.
“I will be very honest. It has become difficult because you lost both matches at home. It means you have lost 100 percent points. You came from England with less than 50 percent points. You got 100 percent points against the West Indies,” Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
“You will have to do well against Sri Lanka, then New Zealand, and then Australia at home. You don’t win five matches in a five-match series. It doesn’t happen generally. So winning 100 percent points there is very difficult,” he added.
The renowned commentator said India should have won at least one Test match against the Proteas. India suffered a 30-run loss in the opening Test at Kolkata as they failed to chase down 124 runs.
“India’s WTC final is tough. It is not going to be an easy one. I can 100 percent share that with you, and it is not good news. India should have won at least one match and garnered 50 percent points against South Africa,” he said.
The former Delhi cricketer highlighted that it would not be easy for India to win while playing away in New Zealand.
“Taking a zero from there and then hoping that we will get 100 percent against Australia at home and that we will also win both in New Zealand, it won’t happen that easily. We are unable to beat New Zealand in New Zealand. That’s the truth. So it’s going to be a tough one,” Chopra observed.
India will next take on Sri Lanka in a Test series.
