Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra was stunned after India suffered a 34-run loss against Ireland at Belfast on Friday. Ireland posted a par score of 182 runs on the board but the visitors were skittled out for 148. Barring Abhishek Sharma, who scored 50 runs off 20 balls, none of the other Indian batters could show any resistance.
India was not up to the mark in the run chase and had to pay the price. Moreover, the visitros were sloppy in the field as they could not take their chances. Furthermore, Indian bowlers also could not hit the right areas as ireland posted an above par score on the board.
Chopra reckons this loss would against Ireland would be a wake-up call for India.
“When we are making a new start and building towards 2028, under a new captain, we lost the very first match. It is not earth-shattering; it is not going to change the world. But the truth is that it is a bit of a wake-up call to tell yourself not to take the opposition lightly,” Chopra said in a video on his official X handle.
The former Delhi cricketer highlighted that India was playing with their full strength team, barring the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.
“It was those two overs where we conceded 46 runs and dropped catches as well. Our famed batting line-up fell to ground, and debutants showed us the way out. Let’s be honest, hands on heart, only Bumrah and Pandya were not there, otherwise it was a full-strength team. Despite that, it has been a reality check,” he stated.
The cricketer-turned-commentator added the loss is a crucial reminder that nothing should be taken for granted in International cricket.
“Maybe we will win the next game, maybe we will beat England as well. But let’s be honest, international cricket will keep reminding you do not take anything or anyone for granted. You have to earn victory, and this is a cruel reminder. Take your catches, bowl well, you cannot get out by playing loose shots. Ireland has given us a shock and a cruel reminder that in international cricket you have to win everyday and give your 100% everyday,” he reflected.
The second T20I between Ireland and India will be played at Belfast on Sunday.
