Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra has opened up on the possibility if Kolkata Knight Riders can ask for Rohit Sharma from Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2027 auction. Rohit scored 283 runs in nine matches of IPL 2026 for MI and missed a few matches due to injury woes. Chopra highlighted Rohit has a great record while batting at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
KKR could not qualify for the playoffs in the previous season and they would look to bounce back stronger in IPL 2027. After Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement, KKR would also need to appoint a new skipper and Rohit will bring a lot of experience to the table even if he would not lead the side.
Chopra said KKR would target Rohit Sharma in the trade window but MI won’t be interested in releasing the veteran batter.
“From Mumbai, can they ask for Rohit Sharma? Rohit, Eden Gardens, what a love story. Mumbai won’t release him, I understand, but in the years that are left, Rohit Sharma as a captain and as an opener for a franchise and on a ground where he has charisma,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
The former KKR batter reckons the franchise could offer Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana to MI in exchange for Rohit Sharma.
“He scored 264 runs here. He had thrashed Sri Lanka here. So can they ask for Rohit Sharma and give both Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy in return? The bowling would become extremely weak, but Rohit would manage,” he observed.
Chopra added that MI can alternatively take either Anukul Roy with Harshit Rana or Cameron Green.
“You (MI) can take Anukul Roy and Harshit, or else you can take Cameron Green if you like him. Rinku Singh – no, I mean they can’t release everyone, but Rohit should be on their wishlist,” Chopra noted.
The renowned commentator added that MI skipper Hardik Pandya can also be on KKR’s wishlist ahead of the next season.
“Hardik Pandya might also be on their wishlist because it seems likely that he would come in the market. You would get a new captain and a lower-middle-order batter. He can perform the Andre Russell role,” he said.
Pandya is currently recovering from an injury.
