Abhishek Nayar, former Indian all-rounder, has voiced his belief in the potential leadership qualities of Tilak Varma, envisioning the young talent as a prospective leader for the Indian cricket team. Despite his tender age of 21, Tilak has already showcased promise in the 10 T20Is he’s played for the Men in Blue.
Nayar emphasized Tilak’s significant contributions for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL, highlighting his active role in decision-making processes, offering valuable insights to skipper Rohit Sharma. He perceives this attribute as a positive influence, potentially benefitting both the southpaw and Indian cricket in the long run.
In a conversation with Jio Cinema, Nayar praised Tilak Varma, stating, “What you always see with Tilak Varma is fearlessness… Rohit Sharma often used to say that he is a great cricketing brain. Because when he plays for MI, he gives good suggestions to Rohit. That part of Tilak is going to be great for Indian cricket.”
While the focus often revolves around Tilak’s bowling abilities and adept fielding, Nayar stressed the significance of his batting prowess and leadership acumen, highlighting their potential impact on India’s future performances. He remarked, “Tilak brings two dimensions of his game to the team… his batting and leadership skills.”
As India navigates through a limited number of T20Is leading up to the T20 World Cup next year, the quest for settling into a balanced combination gains paramount importance. The emergence of promising talents like Tilak Varma could be pivotal in shaping India’s approach and prospects in the upcoming cricketing endeavors.
