The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will begin on October 5 with defending champions England taking on the previous edition’s runner-up New Zealand in the tournament’s opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, it was officially confirmed on Tuesday (June 27) at an ICC event in Mumbai to mark the ‘100 days to the World Cup countdown. India will open their campaign against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on October 8.
India’s third game will be against arch-rivals Pakistan, which will be played at Ahmedabad on October 15 while the hosts will take on Afghanistan on October 11 in their second game.
The World Cup will follow the same format which was used in 2019. All 10 teams will take on each other and the top four teams at the end of the league stage will qualify for the semifinals. A total of 48 games will be played over the course of 46 days in the ODI showpiece.
India will play their fourth match of the tournament against Bangladesh in Pune on October 19 whereas they will take on New Zealand on October 22 at Dharamshala. The hosts’ sixth match will be against reigning champions England on October 29 at Lucknow and they will meet Qualifier 2 on November 2.
The Rohit Sharma-led team will take on South Africa on November 5 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata while they will take on Qualifier 1 on November 11 in their last league stage match in Bengaluru.
The first semifinal will be played in Mumbai on November 15 whereas the second semifinal will take place in Kolkata on November 16.
The summit clash of the tournament will be played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on November 19.
