Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble showered praise on Shubman Gill’s captaincy in the ongoing second Test match against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Gill has been leading from the front since he has been given the captaincy bridle by the selectors.
The Indian captain scored an unbeaten knock of 129 runs off 196 balls in the first innings to help India post 518 runs on the board. This was Gill’s 10th Test century and his fifth hundred in 2025. Kumble said Gill has been exceptional since he has been given the captaincy responsibility.
Anil Kumble said on JioHotstar, “Captaining India is never easy. It’s not just about on-field decisions but also handling several responsibilities off it, and Shubman has done exceptionally well. On the field, he’s been outstanding, and as a batter, he’s shown great composure since taking over the captaincy. Today, was no different. He read the situation perfectly, attacked the spinners when needed, and maintained the scoring rate.”
On the other hand, Kumble highlighted that scoring runs is crucial for a young skipper like Shubman Gill. The right-hander had amassed 754 runs in five Test matches against England in his maiden series as a captain.
“For a young captain, scoring runs is vital. It earns respect in the dressing room, strengthens leadership, and builds authority. Usually, experienced players inherit captaincy after years of establishing themselves, but for Shubman, to step up early and perform this well reflects great maturity and bodes well for India’s future,” said Kumble (via the aforementioned source).
Gill has done a fantastic job as a leader and he has delivered consistently with the bat in the last seven Test matches.
West Indies are 205-8 in their first innings.
