Rajasthan Royals secured the fourth and final Indian Premier League Playoffs berth with a convincing 30-run victory over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, thanks largely to a match-defining all-round performance from Jofra Archer.
For a brief period during Mumbai’s chase, the home side looked capable of pulling off an unlikely comeback. Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya stitched together a dangerous partnership that threatened to turn the contest around in front of nearly 19,000 schoolchildren attending the game under Mumbai Indians owners’ Education and Sports For All initiative.
However, Archer’s return to the attack proved decisive. The England fast bowler delivered a sharp short ball that Hardik mistimed to long on, effectively ending Mumbai’s hopes and sealing Rajasthan’s place in the playoffs after a disappointing 2025 season.
Earlier in the evening, Rajasthan recovered strongly after a middle-order wobble to post a challenging total of 205. Archer’s late cameo with the bat played a major role in shifting momentum back in Rajasthan’s favour.
Promoted unexpectedly to No. 7 ahead of designated finisher Shubham Dubey and Impact Player Ravindra Jadeja, Archer immediately justified the decision with aggressive strokeplay. His powerful hitting helped Rajasthan collect 73 runs in the final five overs after the innings had briefly slowed down.
Mumbai’s bowlers struggled to contain the late assault, especially with the team resting premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. Captain Hardik Pandya also did not bowl, leaving Mumbai short of options during the closing stages.
Rajasthan’s innings had earlier featured an explosive start from Yashasvi Jaiswal, while teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi showed glimpses of brilliance before falling to a well-planned fielding trap. The middle order, including captain Riyan Parag, lost wickets trying to accelerate, and Donovan Ferreira was run out following a mix-up involving Dhruv Jurel.
Archer then carried his momentum into the bowling innings. He dismissed Rohit Sharma in the opening over and later cleaned up Naman Dhir with another sharp delivery to put Mumbai under pressure early.
Although Suryakumar and Hardik briefly revived hopes with an aggressive counterattack, Archer’s final intervention ensured Rajasthan completed a memorable victory and officially booked their place in the IPL Playoffs.
