Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra reckons Arshdeep Singh is a player for the long haul and has backed the left-arm pacer to play in all three formats of the game. Arshdeep has impressed in his young career but he is yet to make his Test debut.
The left-arm pacer has scalped 41 wickets in 26 T20I matches whereas he has picked 57 wickets in 51 IPL matches. The 24-year-old is yet to take his maiden ODI wicket despite playing three matches.
Singh has snared 33 wickets in 10 first-class matches for Punjab at an average of 28.24. The youngster has decent pace and he is known to nail his yorkers.
Furthermore, Singh can get the new ball to swing both ways. Singh had impressed one and all in the 2022 T20 World Cup as he took 10 wickets in the six matches and played a key role in taking the team to the semifinals.
Singh was recently added to the Asian Games squad, which will be led by Chennai Super Kings opener Ruturaj Gaikwad. Aakash Chopra is surprised that Singh is added to the Asian Games squad and he is not considered for ODI selection of the senior team.
Chopra said on his YouTube Channel, “I am surprised Arshdeep Singh’s name is in this team. I am surprised because they are not considering him for ODIs at all. You didn’t consider him for the T20Is as well in the West Indies. Now you are not considering him for the Asia Cup and are already keeping him out of the World Cup list. What has happened?”
The renowned commentator is a little surprised by Mukesh Kumar’s selection, who is part of all three teams on the ongoing tour of the West Indies. Chopra reckons Singh should be part of India’s limited-overs squads.
“When I see Arshdeep Singh, it seems like there is a huge upside, he is a player for the long haul and can play all three formats, at least both white-ball formats, but they have not kept him currently. I am a little intrigued about Mukesh Kumar. He is part of all three formats for the West Indies tour. He is in the ODI team as well, so he might be in the race for the Asia Cup as well but you have removed him from the World Cup race,” Chopra added.
The second Test match will be played from 20th July at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.
