Indian great Sunil Gavaskar was delighted after Jaydev Unadkat made a fine return to Test match cricket. Unadkat replaced Kuldeep Yadav in the final XI and he is playing a Test match after a gap of 12 years and 118 Test matches.
Unadkat was right on the money in his opening spell and he dismissed the first Test centurion Zakir Hasan with the ball which bounced awkwardly. This was Unadkat’s first Test wicket as he had gone wicketless in his maiden Test match against South Africa back in 2010.
The left-arm seamer also got rid of Mushfiqur Rahim as he got the ball to move away from the right-hander to take the outside edge.
Meanwhile, Jaydev Unadkat is 1.75 m tall and Gavaskar feels the fast bowler made the most of his height. In fact, Unadkat’s release point was higher than Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj and he was able to get more bounce from the surface.
“Even in the first over that he bowled, he got the ball to nip back in and bounce. If there was a forward short leg, maybe he would have got a wicket earlier on. He was also unlucky that a couple of edges flew away from the fielders,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying to Sony Sports Network.
“Good to see him taking his first wicket and, hopefully, it’s the first of many because he brings a left-hand variety into the attack. He is using his height well, he is banging the ball just short of a length, not looking to bowl the bouncer. And look at those figures,” he added.
Jaydev Unadkat has done the hard yards at the domestic level and he deserved his chance in the second Test match against the Tigers. The Saurashtra seamer has scalped 353 wickets in 96 first-class matches at an impressive average of 23.04.
