India’s veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has put his weight behind Mohammed Siraj to be part of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Siraj returned with a fine spell of 3-32 in his quota of 10 overs in the first ODI against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka on Sunday.
Siraj accounted for Anamul Haque, Hasan Mahmud, and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim. Thus, Siraj was the pick of the Indian bowlers and made it difficult for Bangladesh to chase down the score.
Siraj can get the new ball to swing and he is known to bowl in the right areas. Furthermore, it has been noticed that Siraj gives his best in every spell and bends his back to consistently bowl above 140 kmph.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik said: “He is a handful with the new ball and the fact that through the middle. He is able to pick those wickets as well. He is definitely somebody that India will be looking at. We know Bumrah is there, but the other slots are open for the moment.”
He continued: “I think Mohammed Siraj is one hell of a strong contender going into the fast-bowling attack that India would possess in this World Cup.”
Siraj was once again right on the money and breathed down the neck of Bangladesh’s batters to deliver the goods for the team.
Karthik added that Siraj has been really consistent for the team and it has been palpable in his performances.
“He has been really consistent in the recent past. In the South Africa series, he was Man of the Series. Against New Zealand, he bowled really well in the T20s. He is looking good. He’s a sure shot going into the World Cup because he picks up wickets and bowls good length.”
Siraj has scalped 21 wickets in 14 ODI matches at an average of 25.76 and an economy rate of 4.62.
The second ODI between India and Bangladesh will be played at the same venue on Wednesday.
