Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant has been released from India’s ODI squad against Bangladesh. Pant has been released after advice from the BCCI medical team but the reason has not been disclosed. No replacement has been named as India already has KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan, who can keep the wickets, in the squad.
Pant will join the squad for the Test series against Bangladesh. The left-hander has come under his scrutiny for his poor batting form. The Delhi batter had scored 17 runs in two T20I innings against New Zealand while he could only manage 25 runs in the two ODI innings against the Kiwis.
Pant hasn’t been able to grab his opportunity in the limited-overs format and many cricket experts have questioned his place in the team.
“In consultation with the BCCI Medical Team, Rishabh Pant has been released from the ODI squad. He will join the team ahead of the Test series. No replacement has been sought,” a tweet from the official handle of the Indian cricket board read.
In the absence of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul was given wicket-keeping duties in the first ODI against the Tigers on Sunday.
“Some injures and few issues, we got four all-rounders playing,” Rohit said at the toss.
He added, “We hardly played many games in New Zealand, but we fought well. Some of the guys batted really well.”
Rohit revealed the team wants to take one game at a time and not get too far ahead of themselves.
“World Cup is still far away, we don’t want to look too far ahead. We want to focus on what we have in hand and play accordingly,” Rohit said.
Earlier, Umran Malik replaced Mohammed Shami in the ODI squad as the latter was ruled out with a groin injury.
The first Test match between Bangladesh and India will be played on December 14.
