Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that Ajit Agarkar wouldn’t extended his current contract, which expires on October 4, as chief selector of the India’s men team. 

Saikia said that the position would be ‘vacant’ after that date and that the board has ‘sufficient time’ to decide on his replacement.

“As far as Ajit Agarkar is concerned, his tenure is going to be over on 4th of October and we have sufficient time till 4th,” Saikia told PTI Videos. “We are going to take a decision regarding the vacant position which will be there after 4th of October. Once any decision is taken by BCCI, we will definitely announce it in public domain,” he added.

RP Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Shiv Sunder Das and Ajay Ratra are the other members of the selection committee. It was recently reported that former Indian wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel can also take over as the chief selector.

Meanwhile, during Agarkar’s reign, star players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin announced their Test retirement.

Furthermore, Suryakumar Yadav was also dropped after leading India to T20 World Cup glory as he wasn’t in the best of forms. 

Under Agarkar’s tenure, India has won two T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026 and the Men in Blue have also won the 2025 Champions Trophy.

On the other hand, Agarkar also decided to pass on the ODI captaincy baton from Rohit Sharma to Shubman Gill. According to reports, Agarkar’s selection committee wanted India to move on from Rohit Sharma but the BCCI’s secretary Devajit Saikia made a public statement in which he backed the veteran opener. 

Thus, there were differences between the selection committee and the BCCI over the player’s handling, which is leading to Agarkar’s exit.
