Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer shared that the Ahmedabad pitch is a perfect strip for batting and he belives the pitch will remain good for batting even on Day 2. After the last three matches played on turning tracks, we finally get to see a pitch that favours batting and Usman Khawaja made the most of it as he scored a brilliant ton and showed us a mixture of defense and attack.
Jaffer believes that the Australians have done well on this pitch and will look to continue the same thing in Day 2 aswell. He liked the approach from the Australian batters, the way they occupied the crease and scored runs eventually.
“It’s probably the best pitch from a batter’s perspective. There were no demons. I think probably from Day 3, you might get to see that, but at least that’s what you need to have. First two days, it should favour the batters, and Australia made the most of it. I liked their approach. They occupied the crease and didn’t look to score quickly,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.
The day ended with Khawaja and Cameron Green putting up a 85-run stand for the fifth wicket.
During the discussion, former Australian captain, Ian Chappell also pointed out that the bowlers cannot miss their line against Green as he will not shy away from playing the attacking shots. Chappell is also impressed with his bowling skills and feels that he will be needed in this match.
“If you bowl up around the off stump, he will really punish you. He has got a lot of good things about his ability, and obviously the fact that the can bowl. He can bowl quite quickly, which gives Australia the option of using him as an opening bowler. But he needs to keep making runs at No.6,” Chappell shared.
The young allrounder showed great intent to score runs and played some great attacking strokes in the final session of Day 1. He raced to 49 runs at stumps and will look to continue in the same fashion in Day 2.
