After a decade-long wait for Indian Premier League action, the crowd at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium in Raipur was rewarded with a tense, low-scoring contest where bowlers and all-rounders dictated the tempo instead of explosive batting displays.
Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru held their nerve to secure a dramatic two-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians on Sunday, climbing to the top of the IPL 2026 points table in the process.
The match was shaped early by veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose outstanding four-wicket spell dismantled Mumbai’s top order after RCB captain Rajat Patidar elected to bowl first on a challenging black-soil surface.
Bhuvneshwar made an immediate impact by dismissing Ryan Rickelton before using his trademark knuckleball to remove Rohit Sharma, who had briefly looked dangerous after striking two sixes off Josh Hazlewood. The experienced seamer then sent back Suryakumar Yadav for a first-ball duck to leave Mumbai reeling inside the PowerPlay.
With the pitch offering uneven bounce, rebuilding the innings was never going to be easy. However, Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir steadied the innings with a crucial 82-run partnership. Tilak anchored the innings with a composed half-century, focusing more on placement and timing than brute force to help Mumbai cross 150.
Just when Mumbai looked set for a strong finish, Bhuvneshwar returned to bowl Tilak with a pinpoint yorker, restricting the visitors to 165 and preventing late momentum.
RCB’s chase, however, quickly became complicated. Deepak Chahar struck twice early, dismissing Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal, while Patidar’s dismissal off Corbin Bosch tilted the balance back in Mumbai’s favour.
Promoted to number five, Krunal Pandya produced a determined innings under pressure. Mixing sweeps with powerful straight hits against the spinners, the left-hander slowly guided RCB back into the contest. Even as Bosch triggered another collapse with three quick wickets, Krunal battled cramps and continued pushing the chase deep into the final over.
With tension building in the closing moments, it was fitting that Bhuvneshwar had the final say. The pacer smashed a crucial six in the last over to complete a memorable win for Bengaluru and officially end Mumbai Indians’ hopes of reaching the IPL playoffs.
