Chennai Super Kings produced a spirited all-round performance to defeat Kolkata Knight Riders by 32 runs at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, becoming the first team this season to successfully defend a total below 200 in the Indian Premier League.
In front of a packed Chepauk crowd celebrating Tamil New Year, CSK got off to a flying start thanks to Sanju Samson. The opener set the tone early, smashing three consecutive boundaries off Vaibhav Arora in the PowerPlay. His aggressive approach provided the spark that CSK had often lacked this season.
However, the momentum briefly faltered when Anukul Roy dismissed skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad cheaply, continuing the captain’s poor run at the top. CSK’s struggles with opening partnerships remained evident.
Youngster Ayush Mhatre then took charge, launching a counterattack that included a 21-run over against Cameron Green. Though his promising innings ended soon after, CSK maintained the scoring rate with Dewald Brevis continuing the assault.
The innings saw multiple shifts in momentum. Kartik Tyagi struck a crucial blow by clean bowling Samson with pace, while Sunil Narine removed Sarfaraz Khan. Despite crossing 100 in under 10 overs, CSK slowed significantly at the death, finishing on 192, with Tyagi’s variations proving particularly effective.
In reply, KKR experimented by promoting Narine to open alongside Finn Allen. The move failed to pay off as CSK’s bowling unit struck early. Anshul Kamboj dismissed Allen cheaply, while Khaleel Ahmed removed Narine after a brief stay.
KKR struggled to build momentum, crawling to just 36 runs in the PowerPlay. A brief recovery came through Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who stitched together a 51-run partnership. But Akeal Hosein broke the stand, triggering a collapse.
The decisive blow came from Noor Ahmad, who ripped through the middle order with three key wickets, including Rahane and Green in successive deliveries, followed by Rinku Singh.
With KKR reduced to 90/6, the chase slipped out of reach despite efforts from Rovman Powell and Ramandeep Singh. The target proved too steep, handing CSK their second consecutive victory.
The win lifts CSK to eighth in the standings, while KKR, with just one point from five games, faces an uphill battle to keep its playoff hopes alive.
