CSK Hit Rock Bottom: Dhoni’s Future Under Spotlight After Dismal IPL Season

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are enduring their worst season in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, finding themselves at the bottom of the table with just three wins from thirteen matches. Even if they manage a win in their final league game against the Gujarat Titans, their chances of climbing above Rajasthan Royals hinge on an unrealistic margin of victory—something that feels highly improbable given their current form.

This marks the first time CSK will finish last in the IPL standings, a startling outcome for a franchise known for consistency and competitiveness. The disastrous campaign has sparked major concerns about the team’s future and its leadership, particularly the role of MS Dhoni.

Returning as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to injury, Dhoni, 43, was seen as the one who could spark a revival. Instead, the team has struggled to find direction, and fans’ hopes for a comeback have been dashed. While his legacy remains untouched, questions are being asked about whether his continued presence is now hindering rather than helping the team’s rebuilding process.

Former India international Sanjay Bangar, speaking on ESPNcricinfo, weighed in on the situation with a pointed assessment. “At 43, it’s very tough to play in that competitive environment. Leave aside this competitive environment, but even if you go and play some local cricket, you will find how tough it is on the body,” Bangar said.

He added, “It all boils down to MS, but if I was MS, I would say it’s enough. I have played whatever I wanted to play; I have looked after the interest of the franchise as well – if that was the motivation – but you know, you move on… There is never an ideal time. So you might as well have peace with the fact that even if I leave now, the franchise will develop on its own.”

Dhoni has managed 196 runs this season at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17—numbers that reflect effort, but not the kind of influence the team desperately needed.

CSK’s woes go beyond the playing field. The franchise’s auction strategy has come under scrutiny, with several decisions backfiring. Despite the emotional lift Dhoni’s return provided, the team failed to build any rhythm or cohesion.

With the 2025 season coming to a close, CSK finds itself at a crossroads. A long-term vision and a bold decision about Dhoni’s role may be necessary to revive a franchise that once set the gold standard in the IPL.
