In what could become one of the most dramatic trades in Indian Premier League history, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are closing in on a deal with Rajasthan Royals (RR) to acquire wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. As part of the exchange, CSK is set to part ways with former captain and long-serving all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, marking a potential end to one of the franchise’s most iconic partnerships.
According to reports, the trade discussions have advanced significantly, though the Royals are believed to be demanding an additional player as part of the package to release their captain. CSK, however, prefers a straight swap, with both players currently valued around the ₹18-crore mark. While the Super Kings have not completely ruled out including another cricketer, their priority remains securing Samson as a direct trade for Jadeja.
The move follows a disappointing 2025 season for CSK, which saw the five-time champions finish at the bottom of the standings with just four wins. The team struggled with an inconsistent batting unit, a concern the management is keen to address ahead of the next campaign. Acquiring Samson, known for his explosive stroke play and ability to anchor innings, is viewed as a strategic step to reinvigorate the batting lineup.
Jadeja’s potential departure would mark the end of an era for the Super Kings. The left-handed all-rounder, who joined CSK in 2012 for USD 2 million, has been a cornerstone of the franchise’s success over the years. He played pivotal roles in their title triumphs in 2018, 2021, and the memorable 2023 final, where his last-ball heroics sealed victory against Gujarat Titans.
For Jadeja, a move to Rajasthan would bring his career full circle. He first burst onto the scene with the Royals in 2008, contributing significantly to their inaugural title win under Shane Warne’s leadership.
Samson, on the other hand, has been synonymous with the Royals since his debut season in 2013, apart from a two-year stint with Delhi Daredevils. Having captained RR since 2021, he led them to the finals in 2022 and remains one of the most dynamic leaders in the league.
If the deal materializes, it would represent a seismic shift in IPL dynamics, swapping two of the league’s most recognizable faces and signaling the start of a major rebuild in Chennai.
