Former Indian skipper and selector Dilip Vengsarkar has backed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to find success in all three forms of the game. Sooryavanshi recently didn’t get any game time in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan.

The youngster recently scored 192 runs in five innings of the Duleep Trophy while playing for East Zone. Earlier, he scored 151 runs in three games against Zimbabwe after getting off to a slow start on the England tour.

Sooryavanshi had hogged all the limelight after he scored 776 runs in 16 matches of IPL 2026 at a blistering strike rate of 237.30 for Rajasthan Royals.

While Sooryavanshi has certainly shown the skills to deliver in the white-ball formats, there are doubts if can replicate the same performances in the red-ball version. In 11 first-class matches, Sooryavanshi has scored 399 runs at an average of 23.47.

“I don’t understand why they make such an issue of white and red ball? He is playing so brilliantly in white ball, why can’t he play red-ball cricket, or pink-ball cricket for that matter? It is a matter of how you adjust, he is an excellent player with excellent skills also. I am sure he will do it,” said Vengsarkar as quoted by Hindustan Times.

“He is playing at the top level all the time so he is bound to keep improving.”

On the other hand, former India batter and Mumbai Ranji Trophy coach Pravin Amre backed Sooryavanshi to face 100 balls in the red-ball version.

“He shouldn’t change his game, he has to play the way he plays. He is a special talent, with maturity he can be like Virender Sehwag. When he started, people doubted Sehwag, he is the one who got a triple century in Test matches,” said Amre, a former India batter.

“He has to focus on playing 100 balls, (and) not think about runs.

Sooryavanshi will be seen in action in the Asian Games.
