Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has backed Rohit Sharma to take over as Mumbai Indians’ captain ahead of IPL 2027. Hardik Pandya is expected to part ways with the franchise and if he doesn’t, it is reported that he may not continue as captain.
Under Pandya, Mumbai Indians have managed to qualify for the playoffs on a solitary occasion in the last three seasons.
Meanwhile, Rohit led Mumbai Indians to great success as a leader. He led the franchise to five titles and he is the joint most successful IPL captain along with MS Dhoni in the tournament’s history.
“I think they are looking for a new captain. It’s just a matter of time before they announce it. And why not Rohit Sharma? He has been the most successful captain. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that along with MS Dhoni, he has been the most successful captain. So, if they go back to him, there is no harm in it,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
“He is one of the finest captains. When his services are available, why not use them? If it means he has to be the captain, I think he has that capability. He is a very good captain,” Karthik added.
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya has been struggling with injury woes and last played professional cricket in IPL 2026. It has been reported that Pandya will be next seen in action in IPL 2027.
Rohit, on the other hand, will be seen in action in the ODI series against New Zealand.
Furthermore, Kieron Pollard was appointed as Mumbai Indians’ head coach after the franchise decided to part ways with Mahela Jayawardene.
