Former Indian wicket-keeper bat Dinesh Karthik believes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi handed English fast bowlers quite well while making his debut. However, he admitted it was a difficult challenge for the youngster as Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer were getting extra bounce from the surface.
Sooryavanshi was finally given his T20I debut cap and he became the youngest Indian to make his debut in international cricket after Sachin Tendulkar.
However, Sooryavanshi’s debut was not a memorable one as he was dismissed after scoring 14 runs off 10 balls. The prodigy batter was stumped by Jos Buttler on the bowling of Will Jacks.
“We all know what a splendid start he has had in the IPL, he is basically every fans’ absolute darling right now, because the way he plays, aggressive, lot of intent, but just 15 years of age. He became the youngest Indian to make an international debut. He started quite nicely; when the ball was bouncing, not too much seam, but it was a little hard with Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue bowling high pace, but he handled it quite well,” Dinesh Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
“You thought, ‘Okay, Vaibhav is there, ready, now he is going to show us a glimpse of what he has been showing us in the IPL a lot’. But Will Jacks came in, and he played a dot ball to mid-on, and then he thought maybe it is my time to step out and hit him, but missed the ball,” he added.
Karthik is optimistic that Sooryavanshi’s stint with the Indian team will be a long one as he has shown the skills to go big in his career.
“The whole ground was waiting for his young boy to walk out, and when he came in, they were again clapping for him, giving him as much love as possible. And he paid them back, played a couple of lovely shots, but sadly, it was only a short stint. But his stint with the Indian cricket team is going to be a very, very long one,” Dinesh Karthik said.
The third T20I between England and India will be played at Nottingham on Tuesday.
