Argentina’s goalkeeper Emi Martinez is considering his future with the national team after World Cup final heartbreak. La Albiceleste suffered a 1-0 loss in the summit clash against Spain at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey on Sunday.

The reigning champions were one win away from defending their World Cup crown but they were totally outplayed by Spain. Martinez played a key role in keeping Argentina in the contest in the regular time by making vital saves.

However, Martinez was finally beaten after Ferran Torres thundered the ball in the back of the net in the 106th minute. The Aston Villa player had won the Golden Glove award in 2022 edition of the World Cup, which Argentina had won.

Martinez conceded a total of eight goals in 2026 World Cup and shared his disappointment after his team could not go all the way. The 33-year-old hinted that he may hang his boots if it is time for him to go.

He wrote on his Instragram post, “I dreamed of winning it again; I dreamed of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more.

“Honestly, the pain is hard to put into words. Now I have to reflect on many things, see how to move forward, and decide if it’s time to step aside.

“I am truly sorry. I gave it my all to help my country and my teammates.”

The Argentina goalkeeper kept two clean sheets in the eight games of the quadrennial tournament. Martinez played every minute of the competition for Argentina.

Meanwhile, Argentina could only take two shots whereas Spain took 20 shots in the final. Lionel Scaloni’s team could not bring their best to the pitch and Spain was definitely the superior team.
