Former England batter Nick Compton believes Joe Root can surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most Test runs. Root has been in amazing form in the recent past and he has scored 10 Test centuries in the last two years as he is batting at the top of his game.
The talisman has soared to the top of the rankings in Test cricket. Root scored 396 runs in three Test matches at an average of 99 and a strike rate of 74.16 in the recent series against Test champions New Zealand.
The linchpin has amassed 10285 runs in 120 Test matches at an average of 50.17. Root is only 31 years old and there is no doubt that he still has got at least six to seven years of cricket left in him.
On the other hand, Sachin Tendulkar is the highest run-getter in the red-ball version as the legendary Indian batter had scored 15921 runs in 200 Test matches in his glorious career.
Thus, Root needs another 5637 runs to leapfrog Tendulkar’s tally of Test runs and if continues to bat in a similar fashion, he can definitely go past the Master Blaster’s record.
Asked if Root can break Tendulkar’s record, Nick Compton said while talking to Sportskeeda, “I think he can. He’s young and is right up there with Tendulkar in terms of runs scored at 31 [years of age]. Barring a loss of fitness or a major injury, it’s hard not to see someone playing like him scoring runs.”
He added, “Joe is an incredible player. When you think of his consistency, he scores runs every time he bats. I think there will come a point when the runs dry up or he has a tough series.”
Compton concluded, “Between now and Tendulkar’s record, if he can keep going like this, he’ll get there. If there’s a big slump in his form, how will he respond and get through that? That will be the next big challenge for him. At the moment, there’s nothing stopping him. It would be an amazing achievement if he breaks Tendulkar’s record.”
There is no doubt that Joe Root is batting like a dream and everything he touches turns to gold. Root will want to be at his best in the rescheduled Test match against India.
