Former South African captain Faf du Plessis reckons the opposition can line up Shivam Dube as the medium pacer is the weak link in India’s bowling attack after the win against Zimbabwe. India registered a comprehensive 72-run win against Sikandar Raza’s team at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Dube conceded 46 runs in the two overs he bowled and accounted for Tashinga Musekiwa. Dube could not get his line right as he bowled four wides and also bowled two no-balls.
The medium pacer had also conceded 32 runs in two overs against South Africa in the previous game.
Faf du Plessis said on ESPN Cricinfo, “100 percent. So, you look at it and you go, who are the danger bowlers. Most of the times, it is [Jasprit] Bumrah. But, on that day, you make a call and go, I can get on top of someone here today, the sixth bowling option is going to come up and it’s going to bowl wide yorkers to us. They can line him [Dube] up.”
On the other hand, former Indian captain Anil Kumble concurred with Faf du Plessis, stating the opposition can take advantage against India’s sixth bowling option.
“They did all the right things to get batters to bowl a bit through the previous T20 World Cup to now. If you look at the 18 months where they have won [almost] every single game, they ensured that Tilak Varma got to bowl, Abhishek Sharma got to bowl, Dube got to bowl, then even Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav bowled. In that sense, you have options. But, on a flat pitch, there will be challenges.
“So, India will want that eighth batter comfort rather than just going with seven batters and five bowlers,” the leg-spin legend concluded.
India will take on the West Indies at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Sunday.
