India’s packed cricket calendar offers little respite. Having completed a five-match T20I series against West Indies at home on October 17, Shreyas Iyer’s team will begin another five-match contest in New Zealand on October 21. The turnaround is short, the conditions will be different, and there are several questions India must answer as they prepare for the challenge.
Here are five talking points ahead of the first T20I.
One – can Abhishek Sharma make an impact in New Zealand?
Abhishek will be playing his first tour of New Zealand, and there is considerable interest in how the aggressive opener adapts to the conditions. He was Player of the Series in Australia last year but struggled during India’s tour of England this summer.
New Zealand’s pace attack is likely to test him with short-pitched deliveries, an approach that could prove decisive in determining how successful his tour will be. Abhishek has the ability to take a game away from the opposition in a matter of overs, but consistency against quality pace will be crucial.
Two – will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi get his opportunity?
One of the biggest selection questions concerns teenage batting sensation Sooryavanshi. Abhishek and Sanju Samson remain India’s preferred opening combination, leaving Vaibhav waiting for his chance.
There is little doubt that he is a promising talent, but opportunities at international level can be difficult to come by when established players occupy the preferred positions. India will need to decide whether to stick with their existing combination or give Vaibhav a taste of international cricket in conditions that could test his technique and temperament.
Even a single appearance could prove valuable experience for the young batter.
Three – can Bhuvneshwar Kumar make his comeback count?
Bhuvneshwar returns to the Indian setup after four years, with his last appearance for the country coming during the previous tour of New Zealand.
However, his record there offers limited evidence that he will automatically make a significant difference. He has taken just four wickets in five T20Is in the country. With Jasprit Bumrah rested and Hardik Pandya still absent, India will need Bhuvneshwar to contribute more than just experience.
His ability to swing the new ball and control the scoring rate could be important, but the real question is whether he can deliver wickets when India need them most.
Four – can Varun Chakravarthy stay fit?
Chakravarthy returns after another injury layoff, with fitness concerns having restricted his appearances since the World Cup.
India will want their mystery spinner available throughout the series, particularly given his potential to trouble batters in the middle overs. With the next T20 World Cup cycle leading towards 2028, Varun needs a sustained run of fitness and performances to remain firmly in the reckoning.
And five – will Iyer rise to the challenge?
Iyer’s batting has been inconsistent, but it is his captaincy that presents the bigger question. Team selection, field placements and bowling changes have all attracted scrutiny.
New Zealand away is not an easy assignment, and India cannot afford repeated tactical errors. Iyer will need to make clear decisions, manage his resources intelligently and inspire confidence in a squad facing a demanding stretch of cricket.
Five matches offer opportunities to experiment, but they also leave little room for prolonged uncertainty.
