Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh believes it would not be prudent to judge Shubman Gill’s team too early. So far, Gill has led India in three Test matches against England, winning one and losing two. While India could not grab their chances in the first Test match at Leeds, Headingley, the visitors could not chase down 193 runs at Lord’s.
Thus, the series could have been different if the tourists had grabbed the crucial stages of the series. Gill’s team is in a transition phase after Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirements. Furthermore, Mohammad Shami is not available on the England tour due to injury and fitness woes.
Harbhajan Singh said on India Today, “Results do not define how good the team has been. I have said before this tour as well, do not judge this team too early or too often. This is a young team that can turn into a world-beater. The match that they won in Birmingham – that was incredible. India could have won at Lord’s as well; they were quite close. And this team will learn a lot from this series. And the lessons they will take from this series, they will use to their favour in the future. We should not judge them too quickly.”
Meanwhile, Gill has led from the front, scoring 607 runs in three Test matches at a splendid average of 101.17. The Turbanator said Gill is going to be India’s pillar in the upcoming years.
Harbhajan concluded, “Shubman Gill is a big player, and he will be the pillar of the Indian team for many years to come. How many Indian batters have come and stamped their authority in England? He definitely has the capability, and I never doubted his credentials for a moment in international cricket. His basics are so good. His father has worked so much on him. He has made Shubman repeat his drills at least a thousand times. And you can see that when he plays the ball.”
The fourth Test match between England and India will be played at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, from July 23 onwards.
