Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has opened up on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future after the conclusion of the 2025 Champions Trophy. India lifted their third Champions Trophy title after beating New Zealand by four wickets at Dubai.
While Kohli scored 218 runs in five matches of the eight-team tournament, Rohit scored a match-winning knock of 76 runs off 83 balls in the summit clash against the Kiwis.
After the competition, both Kohli and Rohit have confirmed that they have no plans of retiring from ODIs. The Turbanator reckons it will be crucial for Rohit and Virat to maintain their fitness and with the 2027 ODI World Cup still two years away, it is hard to predict what lies in store for the veteran duo.
Harbhajan Singh said on ESPN Cricinfo, “I feel that if anything is left for him to achieve is the 50-over World Cup. He would probably want to win but there is still two and a half years for that. That is way too far, he will have to see where his fitness is going, where his hunger is going. If he’s still got it, he will have to work hard for it and if he works hard, he will play. So, is the case with Virat Kohli.”
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma said he is keeping his options open for the 2027 World Cup.
“It is very hard to say that right now. But I am keeping all my options open. I want to see how well I am playing. Right now, I am playing really, really well, and I am enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice. I cannot really say 2027, because it is too far, but I am keeping all my options.”
Rohit led India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup but they could not cross the final hurdle against Australia.
Rohit will play for Mumbai Indians whereas Kohli will play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the upcoming IPL 2025.
