India’s left-arm orthodox spinner Harsh Dubey is optimistic of making his Test debut ahead of the New Zealand tour. The 24-year-old recently made his ODI debut against Afghanistan and bagged four wickets in two games.
Dubey, who plays for SRH in the IPL, has 144 wickets in 29 first-class matches at an impressive average of 23.06 while playing for Vidarbha.
In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, Dubey was the leading wicket-taker with 69 scalps in 10 games.
“I feel I will make my Test debut very soon. You can call it visualisation or manifestation or whatever. I also don’t know. But I have a strong feeling. But you cannot say anything till it happens. There are always things that happen suddenly in life, so I am ready for the opportunity,” he said in an exclusive interview with RevSportz.
Dubey admitted he thought he would make his Test debut ahead of the other formats but was given his chance in the 50-over version.
“Even I thought I would make my Test debut before other formats. But I have done comparatively well in one-day cricket as well, even throughout age groups. After Tests, I think my skill set is most suitable for the one-day format. We won the VHT as well, so I feel that it had a major part to play in my ODI debut.”
The youngster revealed he learned a lot after making his IPL debut with SRH in the 2025 season.
“The fame and money are one part. But the better thing is that I got better opportunities. Having higher exposure is very important before playing for India. IPL is a place where you need to know how to handle pressure, and if you don’t, it is the best platform to learn this. I have learnt a lot from there,” he said.
Dubey revealed how he got a call from SRH management regarding the signing when he was playing district T20 tournament. The left-arm spinner replaced Karnataka’s Smaran Ravichandran in the SRH squad.
“It was very funny, actually. Our season was done, and there were some district matches going on. I was fatigued as well and had a slight niggle, so I decided to rest. When I came to Nagpur, I got a call the next afternoon. Harish sir asked me to send my white-ball videos. Atharv Taide was also in SRH at that time, so I called right away, saying they had asked me to send my white-ball videos. He thought it would be for the Chennai league. Then he said maybe they are looking for a replacement, as Smaran is injured. Then they called 4-5 people for trials, and the same night they told me I was picked but told me not to tell anyone till it was officially announced. I was playing some T20 tournament that no one was watching, and my life changed in just two days,” he narrated.
Dubey has scalped 13 wickets in 11 IPL matches.
