India’s young opener Shubman Gill is enjoying opening the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma. Gill hailed the Indian captain, stating he gives the players full freedom for how they want to express their game. Rohit is known to get the best out of the players and he has been leading from the front.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have formed a potent alliance at the top of the order for the team, especially in the ODI format. Gill has been in stellar form in 2023 and Sharma has been guiding the youngster on the right track.
The opening duo will hold the key in the upcoming Asia Cup and the World Cup and will aim to be at their absolute best. The pair has scored 685 runs at an average of 76.11 in their nine partnerships.
Furthermore, Gill was recently awarded the International Men’s Cricketer of the Year and the ODI Player of the Year in the CEAT Cricket rating awards.
“It feels great to be able to open with him, especially knowing that all the focus is on him. He’s someone who likes the other batters to go and just express himself and play the way I want to play the game. So in that nature, he gives the players full freedom for how they want to express their game,” Gill said while speaking to the ICC.
Gill added that Rohit Sharma’s scoring areas are different as compared to his. The right-handed duo have complemented each other with great chemistry.
Gill feels their different style of batting makes them a dangerous pair. “I think because his (Rohit’s) targeted areas are a bit different (to mine). He loves to go aerial in the Powerplay. And I’m someone who likes to find the gaps and keep getting those boundaries, and he’s someone who likes to hit sixes. So I think that combination works well,” Gill added.
Gill and Rohit Sharma will be in action in the upcoming Asia Cup. India will begin their campaign against Pakistan on September 2.
