“He is always thrown into the deep end,” says Former India international Murali Kartik as he lauds Washington Sundar’s efforts in the NZ series

Among the few positives for Indian in the recently concluded series against New Zealand, Washington Sundar’s ability to work under pressure has to be right at the top. The spin bowling all rounder has been one of the best performers in the series for the visitors. Sundar scored 88 runs in the three match series where he got to bat only twice. He scored a maiden 50 in the third match as he batted Indian out of danger.

He came up with a 51 run knock which helped India reach 2018 runs in the third One Day International. It was his first One day half century and it came under pressure when India needed someone to stand up and take them past 200, Sundar was excellent with the bat as he helped Indian reach a slightly respected total.

Former Indian spinner Murali Kartik was highly impressed by the Chennai based allrounder. Kartik shared his views on Sundar’s performances on Prime Video as he mentions how the youngsters is always thrown at the deep end and he always find light in adversity.

“If you look at him overall, right from the time he started playing for India, he was always thrown into the deep end. He was asked to bowl with the new ball. He has bowled the tough overs,” Kartik stated on the young spinner as he lauded his contributions with ball and bat.

Murali Kartik also shared how Sundar stood up during a tough time in Australia making his test debut against the hostile bowling lineup. But nothing bothered him as he batted superbly and then backed it up with his incredible bowling skills. Kartik highlighted how Sundar found success in Down Under where seasoned spinners have struggled.

“Suddenly out of the blue, he is part of a touring party; he gets to play a Test match, bowls really well in a Test match situation, that too in Australia for the first time, where more seasoned spinners have struggled because you need to bowl a lot more over-spin, the way he got Steve Smith out and then batting really well in those conditions,” added the former India spinner.

The Chennai based allrounder made his Test debut for India in the all important Brisbane Test against Australia in January 2021. The Indian team was marred with injuries and needed some spirit from somewhere and Sundar picked up three scalps in the first innings and then scored a valiant 62 with the bat to prove his mettle against a very quality bowling attack.
