I am sure he will come through this – Mahela Jayawardene backs Virat Kohli to come out of rut

Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has backed Virat Kohli to regain form. Kohli hasn’t been at his best in the recent past and will look to turn the tables in the Asia Cup. The right-hander had scored his last International hundred back in 2019 in the pink-ball Test match against Bangladesh.

The talisman was rested for the series against South Africa and Ireland and had an ordinary tour of England. The 32-year-old was once again rested for the series against West Indies and he will also not play against Zimbabwe.

Kohli has now been named in the Asia Cup squad and he will look to get back into form. Many cricket experts believe Kohli is one knock away from getting back his Midas touch.

In fact, Kohli has been averaging 24.83 and scoring at a strike rate of 113.74 in the last year in T20I cricket, which is well below his own lofty standards and he will need to turn the tables.

“It is unfortunate what Virat is going through right now at the moment, but he is a quality player. I believe Virat has the tools to come out of it (the form slump). He has done that in the past as well and I’m sure he’ll come through this. Class is permanent and form is temporary,” said Mahela Jayawardene in the latest episode of The ICC Review show.

Kohli has all the experience under his belt and he will look to make the most of it in the upcoming matches. The former Indian captain will be determined to once again prove his mettle and there is no doubt that he is going to hold the key in the T20 World Cup.

Kohli has scored 3308 runs in 99 T20I matches at an average of 50.12 and a strike rate of 137.66.

India will begin their Asia Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on 28th August.
