‘I could see the World Cup flying:’ Suryakumar Yadav on his spectacular catch in T20 World Cup 2024 Final

In a thrilling climax to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Suryakumar Yadav’s breathtaking catch in the final over secured India’s triumph over South Africa by seven runs, reinstating India as T20 world champions.

South Africa, having faltered in their chase, saw their target shift from needing 30 runs in 30 balls to a daunting 16 runs in the last over. Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya took the responsibility of bowling the final over with South Africa’s David Miller at the crease.

The drama unfolded on the first ball of the final over when Pandya delivered a wider full toss. Miller, known for his powerful hitting, launched the ball down the ground, seemingly set for a boundary. Positioned at long-off, Suryakumar Yadav sprinted towards his left, edging perilously close to the boundary rope.

As the ball appeared destined to clear the boundary, Yadav executed a phenomenal catch. Grabbing the ball just inside the boundary, he was propelled by his momentum over the ropes. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind and athleticism, Yadav tossed the ball into the air before stepping over the boundary cushion. He then re-entered the field to complete the catch, as the TV umpire confirmed the legality of the dismissal. This crucial play sent Miller back to the pavilion and brought India within reach of victory.

Reflecting on his extraordinary catch, Suryakumar Yadav revealed his single-minded focus on the trophy. “I really don’t know what was going through my mind. All I could see was the World Cup flying away and I just latched on to it,” Yadav was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Suryakumar Yadav’s catch has drawn comparisons to Kapil Dev’s legendary catch of Viv Richards in the 1983 World Cup final. Defending a modest total of 183 runs, India faced an onslaught from Richards, who seemed poised to take the match away. However, Richards’ miscued shot saw Kapil Dev sprinting backward from square leg to take a memorable catch, shifting the momentum in India’s favor.

Roger Binny, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and a member of the 1983 squad, compared Yadav’s effort to Kapil’s iconic grab.

“Kapil’s catch was magnificent in its own right. He had to run back, keep an eye on the ball and complete the catch, which he did with great ease. This was a case of incredible athleticism, where Surya was dealing with the variable of the boundary rope. We would have probably lost if he had dropped it, just as it was with Kapil’s catch. These two catches are on a par,” Binny remarked.

While Suryakumar’s catch was the highlight, Hardik Pandya’s bowling in the final over was equally commendable. Pandya held his nerve under immense pressure, delivering precise and calculated deliveries that restricted the South African batsmen. His ability to maintain composure in such high-stakes moments highlights his value to the team as a leader and a player.

This triumph not only reaffirms India’s prowess in the T20 format but also ignites hopes for continued success in future international competitions.

As celebrations continue across the nation, Suryakumar Yadav’s incredible catch will be remembered as a defining moment of this World Cup, akin to the legendary moments of Indian cricket history. The spirit and determination shown by the Indian team throughout the tournament have once again placed them at the pinnacle of world cricket.
