Legendary Brian Lara expects Yashasvi Jaiswal to deliver the goods against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar trophy. This will be the first time when Jaiswal will tour Australia in his young career. Though Jaiswal is still young in his promising Test career, he has shown the skills to go a long way in his career.
Jaiswal was on song throughout the five-match Test series against England earlier in the year. The southpaw scored 712 runs in five matches at an outstanding average of 89 and an impressive strike rate of 79.91. Thus, he was awarded Player of the Series as India won the series by 4-1.
Meanwhile, Jaiswal top-scored in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh with 189 runs at an average of 47.25 and a strike rate of 81.82. The left-hander also returned with twin fifties (72 and 51) in the second Test at Kanpur and ergo was awarded Player of the Match.
Brian Lara said on the sidelines of International Masters League in Mumbai, “Obviously, the pitches in Australia are slightly different. But if you take your mentality, and if you take that sort of strength that you have, you’re going to play good cricket in any conditions. I expect to see him (Jaiswal) do well. I think the adjustment is upstairs. The adjustment is the ability to back your talent in whatever conditions. I say this with a pinch of salt, because conditions in India have changed.”
Lara said Jaiswal doesn’t need to tweak his technique for the Australia tour but feels the youngster needs to be mentally ready for the big challenge.
“With the IPL, you’ve got international players coming – and you’re feeding your players a different level of competition, which is great. So I don’t think there’s much that he (Jaiswal) has to do technically. I just think mentally [he has to adjust]: travelling away from home, [and] playing against Australia; Australia, on their shores, are a different beast.”
The opening Test match between India and Australia will be played at Perth from November 22 onwards.
