Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed concern over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s form ahead of the Border-Gavaskar trophy against Australia. Rohit scored 91 runs in three Test matches against the Kiwis at an average of 15.17 whereas Virat Kohli could only score 93 runs in three Test matches at an average of 15.50.
Furthermore, Rohit could only manage 42 runs in two Test matches at an average of 10.50 against Bangladesh, Kohli scored 99 runs in th same series at an average of 33.
The veteran duo hasn’t been at their best in the recent past and it is certainly a cause of concern for the Indian team ahead of the Australia tour.
“The one thing that India are going to require to win here in Australia is Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli getting big runs and getting back to their best. I hope they do, I fear they won’t,” Michael Vaughan said on Fox Cricket.
“I fear that they might just be over the edge and when you face an Australian attack that is up there with the greatest that has ever played the game in their own backyard, you’ve got to arrive here with solid technique and you’ve got to arrive with amazing mentality,” he added.
Vaughan reckons Kohli is fighting to get back into form and he isn’t at his usual best. The former English batter also recalled how Kohli missed a full toss against Mitchell Santner in the Pune Test.
“I mean last series they won, they had no Virat Kohli to chase down that target at the Gabba. Australia hadn’t lost a Test match at the Gabba in 32 years, but I will say there’s a real concern around Kohli. That full toss that he missed to Mitchell Santner, that’s not Virat Kohli. You’re looking at a player that’s just fighting (for form) at the minute,” said Vaughan.
The opening Test match between India and Australia will be played at Perth from November 22 onwards.
