Former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan feels sorry for head coach Gautam Gambhir after India suffered a 2-0 loss against New Zealand despite playing at home. Gambhir recently took over the coaching baton from Rahul Dravid but hasn’t had a great start to his stint.
India suffered a 2-0 ODI series loss against Sri Lanka and have lost their first Test series at home after a long gap of 12 years. India had won their last 18 Test series while playing at home but they weren’t up to the mark against New Zealand.
Atul Wassan said on PTI, “I feel sorry for Gautam Gambhir to have this albatross across his neck now for losing this series after 12 years, and that too against a team that lost against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka recently. And we are talking about winning the WTC final… In the backdrop of all this, I still cannot overcome this feeling that we have lost within three days.”
Wassan added it is difficult to understand what went wrong as India were overwhelming favourites before the start of the series.
“I think it’s very difficult to put finger on one thing which went wrong, but it’s very shocking for me. I couldn’t, even in my wildest dreams, think that we would lose to New Zealand and that too 2-0 in such a manner. I cannot actually fathom what went wrong.”
India could not come up with a collective batting show in the first two Test matches and it led to their downfall.
The third and final Test match between India and New Zealand will be played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai from November 1 onwards.
