“I just need to go and practise more I guess” – Yashasvi Jaiswal reflects on his dismissal on Day 1 of the IND vs BAN 2024 1st Test

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal believes he needs to practise more against short-pitched deliveries after his dismissal on the opening day of the first Test match against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Thursday.

Jaiswal was troubled a bit by Bangladesh gun fast bowler Nahid Rana and the lanky pacer was able to produce an outside edge to first slip, Shadman Islam.

The left-hander was dismissed on a similar type of delivery against Mark Wood in the five-match Test series against England, earlier in the year. With so much of technology and analysis being used by every International team in the modern era, Jaiswal would know that the opposition’s bowler will target him in the same region once again.

Before his dismissal, Jaiswal scored a gutsy knock of 56 runs off 118 balls despite the regular fall of wickets on the other end.

Jaiswal said in the press-conference, “I can’t say that. Batsmen are going to get out to some deliveries. I just played it. I don’t think there is a lot of time to think. I just need to go and practice more I guess.”

The left-hander added 62 runs with Rishabh Pant, who scored 39 runs on his return to Test cricket.

Revealing the strategy with Pant, Jaiswal said, “Nothing, we were just talking about how we can use our feet. We were trying to score runs off loose balls, form a partnership and play as long as we can.”

India was reeling at 144-6 but Ashwin and Jadeja added 195 runs to take team’s score to 339-6 at the draw of stumps with the former scoring an unbeaten 102 whereas the latter contributed 86*. Jaiswal added they are in a dominating position.

“Initially, the ball was moving and seaming a bit and the wicket was a bit damp, so we took our time. But if you see, in the last session, we scored quite well. I think we are in a good position at the moment.”

“The weather was cloudy at the start, so there was some help for bowlers. Yes, they bowled well, but we also scored runs off loose balls,” he concluded.

Ashwin and Jadeja will look to add more runs to India’s total on the second day’s play.
