Indian opener Sanju Samson admitted he thought his dream is broken after he could only manage 46 runs in five matches against New Zealand before the T20 World Cup. Samson was dropped from the initial matches of the T20I showpiece but eventually got his chance in the Super 8 stage.
Samson was included in the Super 8 stage match against Zimbabwe after India suffered a crushing 76-run loss against South Africa.
Samson returned with scores of 97(50), 89(42), and 89(46) in the virtual quarterfinals, semifinal and final of the tournament, respectively. The right-hander was awarded Player of the tournament after he scored 321 runs in five matches at an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.38.
Samson delivered in the three big matches and played a key role in India’s success.
Sanju Samson said on BCCI.TV, “You definitely can have a dream. You can definitely think that is what you want to achieve, but you can’t plan the way to reach there. That only one person can do.”
“I actually lost it. I think I left it a bit alone after the New Zealand series. I thought my dream is broken. I actually wanted to do this, wanted to be the man for India in this World Cup, but after New Zealand series I thought that I didn’t utilise my opportunity and the dream is broken. But I think the world and God’s grace, things turned around and I’m very happy that what has happened here,” he added.
The 31-year-old batter gave his gratitude to all the people who backed him during the tough phase and showed him the right path.
“Unbelievable, I think, I said before I knew that I have it in me to do it. I had the dream to achieve this, but I didn’t know it would happen so exactly in this current moment,” Samson said.
“So very grateful. I absolutely don’t have words for it, to be very honest. I know, I think genuine prayers and genuine wishes are very powerful. And when it is given by such huge crowd, I think I can’t ask for more.”
“I think they definitely genuinely wish and pray for me. I think that is much, much bigger than anything for me in this life. I want to thank each and every one of you out there who has wished for me, who has prayed for me. Thank you so much, this means the world for me,” he added.
Samson will be next seen in action while playing for CSK in IPL 2026.
