Indian captain Rohit Sharma is on the cusp of joining legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar and his teammate Virat Kohli in an elite list.
When Rohit Sharma will take the field in the second Test match against Sri Lanka, he will be playing his 400th International match and he will become the 9th Indian player to achieve the feat. Rohit has thus far played 44 Test, 230 ODI and 125 T20I matches in his glorious career.
Other Indian players to have played 400 or more International matches include Sachin Tendulkar (664), MS Dhoni (538), Rahul Dravid (509), Virat Kohli (457), Mohammad Azharuddin (433), Sourav Ganguly (424), Anil Kumble (403) and Yuvraj Singh (402). In fact, Sachin Tendulkar has played most International matches in the game.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma made a fine start to his Test captaincy career as he lead the team to an innings and 222 runs win, which is India’s second-biggest win against Sri Lanka. Furthermore, Rohit became the second Indian skipper to win his maiden Test match as captain by an innings after Polly Umrigar.
On the other hand, Rohit made his ODI debut against Ireland in 2007 and then soon made his T20I debut in the 2007 World Cup against England. Rohit had to wait to make his Test debut and played his maiden Test match against West Indies in 2013.
It was the same series in which Sachin Tendulkar bid adieu to the game. Rohit gave a perfect tribute to Sachin as he scored a century on his debut and then followed it another hundred in Sachin’s swansong.
Rohit has taken giant strides in his career since then and he is among the top openers in the world in all three formats of the game. The Mumbaikar is now the leader of the team in all three forms.
The second Test match between India and Sri Lanka will be played at Bengaluru from Saturday.
