Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly reckons Ishan Kishan will get his chance in the ODI format. Shubman Gill was preferred ahead of Kishan in the first ODI against Sri Lanka at Guwahati. Gill, who has been performing consistently in the 50-overs version, scored a fine knock of 70 runs and thus he is expected to get a long rope for the team.
Kishan, on the other hand, scored a magnificent double-century in the last ODI he played against Bangladesh. The left-hander became the fourth Indian to score a double ton in the ODIs and also became the youngest ever to reach the personal milestone.
However, Kishan couldn’t deliver the goods in the T20I series against Sri Lanka.
“I am sure he (Kishan) will get his chance. His time will come,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI.
Ganguly added that the final call will be taken by skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid.
“I don’t know… It is difficult for me to say. In India, we have too many opinions, let (head coach) Rahul Dravid and (skipper) Rohit Sharma decide. People who actually play the game should actually decide who is the best,” Ganguly said.
On the other hand, Ganguly also showered praise on Virat Kohli, who scored his 45th ODI century in the last match against Sri Lanka. Kohli was at his lethal best as he scored 113 runs off just 87 balls and started 2023 on a high.
“Kohli is a fantastic player. He has played many such innings, 45 hundreds don’t happen like this. He is a special talent. There will be periods when he will not score, but he is a special player,” he added.
India has a lot of talent in their squad and the likes of Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav will have to wait for their opportunities in the ODI format.
Meanwhile, India had come up with a collective show in the first ODI against Sri Lanka and they will be looking to replicate the same in the second game against the visitors, which will be played on Thursday in Kolkata.
