India’s gun fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has become the joint fastest Indian pacer to take 50 scalps in the home conditions. Bumrah took 24 Test innings to reach the landmark and equalled former pacer Javagal Srinath’s record.
The Indian ace pacer returned with impressive figures of 3-42 in 14 overs he bowled in the first innings against the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Thursday. Bumrah was a bit wayward in his line and length in the first few minutes of the morning but bounced back strongly.
The right-arm pacer accounted for John Campbell, Justin Greaves, and Johann Layne. Campbell was caught behind by Dhruv Jurel whereas Greaves and Layne’s stumps were rattled by Bumrah’s special yorker.
India were able to bowl out the West Indies at 162 after Roston Chase decided to bat first. Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he returned with impressive figures of 4-40 in 14 overs he bowled. Furthermore, Kuldeep Yadav bagged 2-25 whereas Washington Sundar took one wicket.
The Windies kept losing wickets at regular intervals and could not get any impetus going against the Indian bowlers.
On the other hand, India ended the opening day’s play at 121-2, with KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill unbeaten on 53 and 18 respectively. Rahul scored his 20th Test half-century whereas his opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, was dismissed after scoring 36 runs. Sai Sudharsan was dismissed cheaply after scoring only seven runs.
Meanwhile, former Indian captain Kapil Dev reached 50 Test wickets in 25 Test innings. Ishank Sharma and Mohammad Shami completed 50 scalps in 27 innings each.
